Karl
Mann, a self-taught artist and visionary, would like to make
his 50-year retrospective something greater than himself. In celebration
of his enormous life's works, The Viewing Room will transform
their Chelsea gallery into a unique forum for a two month-long
cooperation of art and community,
Beginning May 2nd and continuing through June 30th, The Viewing
Room and Mann will host a different non-profit organization each
Thursday night in the new 5,000 square foot second floor space
of The Viewing Room.
These evening gatherings will enable each organization to raise
awareness of their missions and gain funding for their various
projects during this difficult climate - a percentage of sales
from Karl Mann's artwork sold during these evening events will
go to benefit the organizations. The organizations to benefit include:
|
| |
The
Lower Eastside Girls Club, May 2nd
ArtStart, May 9th
ArtistCares, May 16th
Neighborhood Magazine, May 23rd
Children & the Classics, June 13th
NURTUREart; June 20th
Art + Community, June: 27th

The
festive atmosphere of these Thursday evenings will be provided
by Karl Mann's vast body of artwork, from a 20 foot-long wall
sculpture of objects salvaged from flea markets (doll heads, tyrannosaurus
rex figurines, beads, wooden fishes) to delicate collages of photos,
fabric and imagery. As Lyie Rexer of the New York Times said,
"His gifts for visual analogy, juxtaposition of textures,
mordant humor are explosive". Those who attend will be dazzled
by Mann's whimsical yet sentimental life's reflections, transforming
the found and forgotten into pieces that are worth remembering.
A percentage of sales from Karl Mann's artwork sold will also
be contributed to The MANN Prize, which will be awarded biannually
to a deserving artist whose work addresses the need for social
change and community involvement.
The 5O-year retrospective exhibition of artist/sculptor Karl Mann
will be open at The Viewing Room from May 2, 2002 - June 30, 2002,
Wednesday through Saturday from 12am - 7pm. An opening for the
public will be held on Thursday, May 2nd from 7-9 pm. An exhibition
catalogue featuring an essay by John Yau will be available. For
more information, please contact, The Viewing Room 646.638.1920
